After causing damage and mobilizing authorities in South region of Brazil, subtropical storm Yakecan advanced towards the Southeast this Thursday (19), causing gusts of winds of up to 90 km/h on the coast of São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro, according to information from Climatempo.

Since the beginning of the week, the wind over the ocean caused by the effect of Yakecan and other extratropical cyclones left the sea very rough on the coast of the South and Southeast regions of the country.

Em Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, for example, the gale it left more than 226 thousand people without electricity and also caused the roofing of thousands of homes.

Despite the disruption caused, the storm, considered by experts to be a cyclone, is now also beginning to move offshore, moving further and further away from Brazil over the next few days.

However, for the solar energy sector, the scenario of destruction left by the cyclone raised doubts in many readers of the Canal Solar on the safety of photovoltaic equipment in the event of atypical natural phenomena such as this.

According to Gustavo Lopes, civil structural engineer at SSM, for the customer to guarantee greater security of the technology, it is essential to pay attention to some details with the manufacturer. Check out three tips from the professional:

  • Technical standards: It is always recommended to ask the structure supplier for a calculation report for the products so that the customer can be sure of having structures that will withstand the action of the wind.
  • Sizing: must be guided by the NBR 8800 standards; NBR 14762; NBR 6120 and NBR 6123 and must be carried out with the support of structural analysis software, to carry out the analysis of maximum displacements that must comply with Annex C of NBR 8800 and Annex A of NBR 14762.
  • Equipment quality: In addition to the need to use sizing tools and observe technical standards, with all calculations presented in a memorial, attention must also be paid to the quality of the materials used and the guarantee provided by the manufacturer. “SSM, for example, based on all the calculations and all the checks presented and carried out by an engineering team, offers a 30-year warranty for the structures, a time compatible with the life expectancy of the photovoltaic modules”, explained Lopes.
