A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) approved, this Tuesday (11), the rules for the Call No. 23/2024 in hydrogen projects in the Brazilian electricity sector, which deals with the registration of projects supported by the PDI (Research, Development and Innovation Program) developed by the Agency, which include the insertion of production systems for renewable hydrogen in an integrated and sustainable way.

One of the main innovations brought by the Agency is that not only will hydrogen projects produced from renewable sources of electrical energy generation (hydraulic, solar and wind), but also from low-carbon, biomass, nuclear, geothermal, marine or thermoelectric sources (with catch, storage and use of carbon).

The topic was discussed with society and associations in the electrical sector in Public Consultation 18/2023, which was open to receive suggestions between June 7th and July 24th, 2023. According to ANEEL, 1,568 contributions were sent to the Agency by 73 institutions.

According to ANEEL, the assessment of impacts on the electricity sector in projects will be restricted to those observed in the SIN (National Interconnected System). In addition, the proposals will also cover topics related to hydrogen logistics (production, storage, other infrastructure and systems, and end uses) and fuel cells (stationary applications, mobile applications, other applications, and unallocated fuel cells). , including related topics.

Property and Benefits of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is considered a significant alternative to the use of fossil fuels. Obtaining hydrogen from renewable sources drives growth in demand for electricity, enabling the use of low-carbon sources as an energy storage option.

Among the benefits of using hydrogen is the improvement in the quality of electrical energy based on prior knowledge of the potential impacts on the electrical system with the adoption of different hydrogen production systems. Another perspective is to increase the reliability of the Brazilian electrical system, due to the possibility of using stored hydrogen to generate energy.
