Energy consumption in January was 71,200 MW (Megawatts) average, an increase of 6.6% compared to the same period in 2023, according to the CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber).
The share of solar energy in energy supply was 3 thousand MW on average, 52,4% more than last year.
Of the 71,200 average MW consumed, 45,458 average MW were supplied to the regulated market, supplying homes and small businesses, an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous year.
Industry and large companies, which purchase energy on the free market, consumed an average of 25,742 MW, marking growth of 5%.
The main factor responsible for the increase in consumption was the above-average temperature, which boosted the use of fans and air conditioning units.
The increase in production in some economic segments also contributed to the increase in energy consumption.
Consumption by economic segment
CCEE monitors 15 different sectors in the free market, and observed that the wood, paper and cellulose segments were the champions with 10.8%, beverages came next with 10.2%, then services with 9.8% and commerce with 9.4% .
In the services and commerce segment, CCEE attributes the growth to the entry of new consumers in the free environment and more intense use of refrigeration equipment, especially in hotels, shopping malls, supermarkets and hypermarkets.
The segments that saw a drop in consumption include telecommunications with -1.9%, the textile industry with -2.7% and vehicle manufacturing with -3.9%.
Consumption by State
In consumption by state, we have three champions that consumed the most: Amazonas (25%), Maranhão (21%), Mato Grosso (16.9%). Rio Grande do Sul recorded a drop of -7.1%, also due to the temperature, but milder.
