Investing in solar has already become a trend among Brazilian cities and states. Espírito Santo, for example, announced a renewable energy program, o GENERATE, which will work on some areas of action, such as regulation, reducing bureaucracy, tax incentives and access to the network.

Sorocaba (SP) was also not left out. Installed a photovoltaic system in the Botanical Garden and will save about 95%.

Also aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions and energy costs, the city of Brotas (SP) built a 100 kWp plant at the city's bus station.

According to Elvis de Almeida, commercial director of MySol, the company responsible for implementing the project, 238 425 W solar panels and two inverters from Intelbras were used. The investment was around R$ 300 thousand.

“The city hall will have a reduction of 7% in the value of the CIP (public lighting fee) – which corresponds to a saving of R$ 12 thousand per month. The payback, return on investment, will be 5 years”, said Almeida, adding that this bus station roof will be used to generate part of the energy that the municipality consumes for lighting.

The executive also highlighted that the city hall's idea is to develop six more micro-plants to help offset CIP consumption, making this money used for other resources. “It’s a great example of how to use solar for collective benefit.”

The municipal electrician of Brotas, Dimas Moreno, relationship contract manager with CPFL, highlighted the objective of implementing more microgeneration units in the city so that, in the near future, they can be the first municipality to have a gradual reduction in this contribution.

“Today, we are the first city in Brazil to take real action to reduce this contribution”, emphasized Moreno. “In addition, we are also arranging for the exchange of our public lighting fleet for LED luminaires, which have better performance and lower consumption per hour”.

“It is worth highlighting that solar microgeneration, in addition to generating dividends directly to municipal public coffers, also benefits the whole of Brazil with less energy generation, whether hydro or biomass – which causes less carbon emissions and less water consumption from hydro sources. ”, he concluded.

In an interview with Canal Solar, Carlos Freitas, national manager of Sales and Special Projects at Intelbras, explained how the partnership with MySol and the city of Brotas came about to carry out the project.

“We have a network of integrators and installers throughout the country. MySol is one of our main partners in the state of São Paulo. As soon as the public notice was made available, we verified that Intelbras had high-technology products, as specified by the city hall. With MySol’s references and technical capacity, we were the winners of this important contract”, reported Freitas.

“The city of Brotas verified that the installation of this photovoltaic system is an excellent business, with a very quick return on investment, especially in roofs, as the 'simultaneity of consumption' rate is very high (instantaneous energy consumption, without the use from the dealership network). They are leaving an ecological legacy for the population and providing great savings for the municipality”, concluded the executive.
