BYD opens 1st laboratory in Latin America for panel production

Manufacturer invested R$ 6 million in the project, which is located in the city of Campinas, in the interior of São Paulo

A BYD opened this Friday (15) in Campinas, sp), O first laboratory from the Latin America studying all cycle from the production of the photovoltaic modules from the processing of silicon ore – the main raw material.

In total, investments were R$ 6 million in the enterprise. In this way, the company totals more of R$ 65 million of contributions to R&D (Research and Development) in the Brazilian photovoltaic sector.

“This initiative only proves that Brazil has the potential to be self-sufficient in the production of photovoltaic modules, as it was the 3rd largest silicon exporter in the world in 2022. Our objective is to stimulate and strengthen production in the national territory, with research and direct development of Brazil”, he stated Rodrigo Garcia, manager in R&D from the BYD Energy.

With a new scope and a more complex structure, the laboratory intends to increase O number in collaborators who will join the team in R&D.

Other releases

During the inauguration event, BYD also announced that it will bring the Battery Service Center to Brazil, which will serve as support for all operations involving products that use BYD batteries in the country and throughout Latin America.

According to the company, this operation will guarantee excellent service for the entire region. The manufacturer also confirmed that it will expand its operations in the country by starting to sell fast chargers for electrified vehicles.

Sector authorities are present

The opening ceremony was attended by around 250 guests, including representatives of the brand and public authorities. Stella Li, global executive vice president of BYD, Tyler Li, CEO of BYD Brasil, Dário Saad, mayor of Campinas, and Felício Ramuth, vice-governor of São Paulo, were present.

This year, BYD reached the milestone of 2.3 million solar panels manufactured in Brazil. Part of the resources invested in R&D in the country are directed to studies carried out in partnership with the main universities and institutes in Brazil, such as Unicamp, Unesp, CTI Renato Archer, UFSC, Instituto Eldorado, among others.

BYD has already invested R$ 7 million in equipment for its own plant, which has a meteorological station dedicated to the study of the most diverse types of modules in tropical soil. The station provides data to a central supervisory system through software responsible for bringing together all the information that is monitored remotely.

BYD's Brazilian R&D center has already developed the following photovoltaic modules: M7K, MBK, MGK, MGTK, MGBK, MLK, LTK, MSK, Harpia, HJT, APV and BIPV.
