O civil construction sector needs to reduce electricity consumption by 37% by 2030 to achieve the global decarbonization goals set out in the Paris Agreement.

This is the main conclusion of the Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction, published by UN (United Nations) last week.

According to the survey, currently, global energy demand for sector of construction represents a fifth of global carbon emissions.

In 2022, O total volume of C02 emitted in the atmosphere through the segment was equivalent to 10 million cars circulating along the Equator.

For Inger Andersen, executive director of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), the current scenario turns on a warning signal. “There is no credible path to tackling climate change without a fundamental change in the construction sector,” he stated.

The professional also said that – as half of the buildings that will exist by 2050 have not yet been built – the current moment is a great opportunity for the sector to reimagine the buildings of the future, I ateinvestments that prioritize the generation of clean energy.

“Now is the time for governments and industries to follow through on the promises of COP 28 and deliver real emissions reductions through real building advancement,” said Inger.

The UN report also highlights that the share of renewable energy in the final electrical energy consumption of buildings was only 6% at the end of 2022, with the goal being to reach at least 18% by 2030.
