Electricity consumption increased by 8% in February, says EPE

The month of February registered the fourth record for electricity consumption in the entire EPE (Energy Research Company) historical series, which began in 2004.

National electricity consumption was 46,314 GWh, an increase of 8% compared to the same period of the previous year. The information is from the EPE Monthly Review.

The review states that the residential class led, for the fifth consecutive month, the double-digit expansion rate. Commerce and industry also grew.

The accumulated consumption in the last 12 months was 538,384 GWh, an increase of 5.4% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Industrial consumption

Industrial consumption totaled 15,546 GWh of electricity in February, with a growth of 6.5% year-on-year.

All regions saw an increase in consumption: South (+8.9%), Northeast (+8.0%), Southeast (+6.2%), Central-West (+6.0%) and North (+1.1%) .

“Only 5 of the 37 monitored industry sectors reduced their consumption compared to February 2023”, stated the review.

Residential consumption

In relation to the residential class, electricity consumption was 15,202 GWh – the third highest in the entire historical series since 2004 – reaching an increase of 11.1% in February this year.

According to EPE, it is the eighth consecutive month with temperatures above the historical average. Heat waves in the country led to the expansion of consumption in February.

All regions saw an increase in consumption in February, with emphasis on the Central-West (+12.0%) and North (+11.8%), followed by the Northeast (+8.9%), Southeast (+7.2% ) and South (+6.1%). Thirteen states had a double-digit increase, with emphasis on Amapá (+37.5%).

Commercial consumption

The commercial class grew 8.8% compared to the same month in 2023, reaching consumption of 8,895 GWh. “Consumption reduced compared to December and January, however, the value was the third highest ever recorded in the entire EPE historical series”, highlighted the EPE.

All regions and states showed positive consumption rates in February. The North region (+15.4%) was the one that expanded the most, followed by the Southeast (+9.4%), Central-West (+8.4%), South (+7.5%) and Northeast (+6.7%) . Among the states, the highlight was also Amapá (+36.0%).

ACL and ACR

As for the free contracting environment, it reached 18,466 GWh – accounting for 38.9% of national electricity consumption in February, registering a growth of 11.5% in consumption and 32.2% in the number of consumers, compared to February 2023.

The Northeast was the region that most expanded consumption (+15.4%) and the number of consumers (+44.2%). “The expansion in the number of free consumers is in line with the migrations planned for 2024 by ANEEL, following MME 50/2022 ordinance that expands the possibility of migration to all group A consumers,” said EPE.

The regulated contracting environment reached 27,847 GWh – accounting for 60.1% of national electricity consumption in February, an increase of 5.8%.

According to the review data, the number of consumer units increased by 1.4% in the period, despite the migration of consumers to the free market.

In the regulated market, the North (+17.9%) recorded the greatest expansion in consumption, while the Northeast (+2.6%) in the number of consumers.
