The City of Curitiba (PR) began installing the plant's photovoltaic modules Caximba Solar Pyramid, located in the municipality’s old landfill, which was deactivated in 2010.

Eighty bases that receive the metal tables and panels have already been completed, with 168 panels installed. In total, there will be 614 bases, with 14 modules in each one.

The expectation is that all more than 8 thousand solar panels will be installed in around three months. According to the Municipal Administration, the pace depends on the rainfall, which has been frequent in the region.

“Our city will never be the same, it will increasingly be powered by solar energy,” said Greca. “The whole of Brazil needs to adhere to this trend”, highlighted Mayor Rafael Greca during the work inspection last week.

According to the Marilza do Carmo Oliveira Dias, municipal secretary of the Environment, the plant will have an installed capacity of 4.55 MWp. “This is the first large-scale project in this area built on a landfill in Latin America”, he commented.

According to the Secretary of the Environment, the initiative has a positive impact on two major issues. “With this project, we transformed an environmental liability into a renewable energy generating plant. Furthermore, we encourage the population to seek less polluting sources of energy”, highlighted Marilza.

The venture is part of a set of program initiatives Curitiba More Energy which aims to combat and mitigate climate change. The program includes the installation of panels in the 29 de Março Palace, in the Barigui Park Events Hall and in the Quatro Estações Gallery, in the Botanical Gardens.

The project is a collaboration of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which supports cities in developing projects to reduce gas emissions and curb the rise in global temperatures.

The program is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

More photovoltaic projects

The next stage of Curitiba Mais Energia includes the bidding for three more photovoltaic systems on the roofs of the Santa Cândida (465 kWp), Boqueirão (512 kWp) and Pinheirinho (925 kWp) bus terminals. The bidding is in the final phase, with the analysis of the companies' qualifications.
