The City of Curitiba (PR) launched a notice to renovate the city's bus lanes. The tender has several requirements, one of which is the use of solar energy to keep lighting, air conditioning and information systems working at stopping points.

O notice It also requires that the surrounding area of the stops meet the demands of users with physical limitations and facilitate the connection of all passengers with other modes, such as cycling and carpooling.

The proposal, worth R$ 4.6 million, in partnership with the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank), is open to foreign competitors. The winner will be chosen based on performance and cost-benefit indexes, according to City Hall.

The changes to the bus system in the city of Paraná are part of Curitiba's strategy to contain pollution, expand the use of public transport and reduce trips by car or motorcycle from 47% to 7% of the total by 2050.

Created in the 1970s, Curitiba's bus system became an international reference at the time for its innovation. The modal, designed by the architect and then mayor Jaime Lerner, also impressed the world because of the stopping points formed by small closed stations, where the passenger paid their fare upon entering, thus speeding up boarding and travel.

The model became known years later as BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), having been reproduced by more than 200 cities around the world, as estimated by the IPPUC (Institute of Research and Urban Planning of Curitiba).

Campinas

In addition to Curitiba, the City of Campinas (SP) is another administration that recently announced that it also intends to use the benefits of solar energy in public transport. In the municipality, the notice for the new tender should be discussed soon.

“The notice is expected to be ready between the end of this month and the beginning of April. And in April it will be presented at a public hearing. This is the deadline and I hope it stays that way”, said Mayor Dário Saadi (Republicans), in a live broadcast on social media, on March 23rd.

A current bidding bus station in Campinas – from 2005 – promises to give rise to a project whose purpose is to include the rationalization of lines to adapt to the municipality’s road plan. In addition to the use of the solar source, the Operating model also includes the creation of a central charging station and encouraging the use of clean fuels.
