Day 1 Intersolar Europe: high-efficiency cells and inverters for large projects

Event brings together the main launches in the solar, storage and electric mobility market

The edition of The Smarter E Europe of 2024 began, this Wednesday (19), in Munich, Germany, with four solo exhibitions – Intersolar Europe, ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe and EM-Power Europe.

O event brings together 3,048 exhibitors, in a space of 206 thousand square meters spread across 19 pavilions and external areas, and brings several launches and news for the solar, storage and electric mobility market.

The event is organized by Solar Promotion and for FWTM (Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe). “We are delighted with the unwavering growth of renewable energy. However, for our energy infrastructure to cope with this growth, we need to update it through digitalization and make it more flexible”, he pointed out. Markus Elsässer, CEO of Solar Promotion.

Cells with efficiency greater than 30%

O Fraunhofer ISE (Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems) displays at its stand the tandem solar cells which, according to researchers at the institute, may have Efficiency higher than 35%.

To the Solar Channel, Fraunhofer explained that tandem cell technology combines silicon with a layer of perovskite to improve the efficiency of solar energy conversion. While silicon has limitations in absorbing specific spectrums of sunlight, perovskite fills this gap by absorbing a different spectrum. 

This combination allows efficiencies of up to 35% to be achieved, compared to the theoretical limit of 25-27% for conventional silicon cells. As a result, solar modules with power up to 1000 W may be viable.

Inverter for large projects

A manufacturer Chint Power displayed at its stand its latest release, the 350 kW inverter, designed mainly for large distributed and centralized generation plants. According to the company, the equipment operates efficiently in temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius without loss of power, guaranteeing high performance in different environmental conditions.

Energy Storage Solutions

A Kehua focused on the event in new generation of EStation 2.0 liquid cooling ESS, which adopts advanced liquid-cooling heat dissipation design. According to the company, the product has an IP65 degree of protection and C5 anti-corrosion treatment, which can operate at full load at 45 ℃ and reach 1.1 times the overload capacity at 40 ℃.

In addition, the open-circuit voltage limit of the solution is increased to 1600 V, the maximum full-load MPPT value is increased to 1500 V, and the interface for energy storage is reserved, which provides advantages such as greater power generation, greater reliability, greater adaptability and lower kWh cost

A Jinko Solar Nor was it left out and presented its energy storage portfolio, such as the new SunTera 5 MWh, the SunGiga All in One and the Residential High Voltage System, presenting solutions ranging from industrial-scale storage to residential solutions.

The SunTera 5 MWh utility-scale battery system offers capacity up to 5 MWh, with advanced features such as liquid cooling It is cell balancing for efficiency and longevity.

Equipped with lithium iron phosphate cells, state-of-the-art battery management
and automated fire protection, the SunTera 5 MWh ensures safety and performance. Its liquid cooling system optimizes thermal management, while the compact design and intelligent O&M minimize space and power requirements.

Already the Exide Technologies, a storage solutions company with more than 100 MWh installed in lithium-ion batteries, exhibited at its stand the Request Mega Three. This system offers 3.4 MWh of capacity, with liquid cooling components.

A Shenzhen Tramsmart was present at the event with a launch of the WalkingBoy, a 2.1 kg lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery with 153.6 Wh capacity. It can be charged using a solar panel or directly from the grid. 

World installed 536 GW of renewables in 2023

According to the last REN21 Global Status Report 2024, presented at the fair, last year alone 536 GW of renewable energy capacity were installed worldwide. Of this total, 407 GW were photovoltaic energy, showing that solar sources play a central role in the expansion of renewables.

“This requires long-term collaborative planning involving all sectors and stakeholders, along with investments in the grid and storage infrastructure needed to unlock greater shares of renewable energy across the economy,” he commented.

Forecasts for installations around the world

O Solar Channel spoke to InfoLink Consulting, which reported that the world should install around 500 GW of solar source power, in 2023 this figure was 447 GW.

Around 50% of these 500 GW should be in China, followed by the United States with 38GW to 42 GW, India should add 20 GW to 25 GW, and Brazil and Germany should fight for fourth position.

Furthermore, the market should remain stable in relation to 2023 and should not experience major growth. A scenario that should be repeated in 2025, growth, if any, of the order of 3%.

Charger for electric vehicles with more efficiency and speed 

A Siemens, a company specializing in industrial automation and software, infrastructure, building technology and transport, was also present at Intersolar Europe 2024, presenting a novelty for electromobility: the most dynamic SICHARGE D charger for eCars and eTrucks from 160 kW to 400 kW.

According to the company, the technology stands out for its dynamic energy allocation, that is, carrying out faster charging and increasing efficiency, in addition to providing greater ease of maintenance and comfort with its 24-inch adjustable screen, ensuring ease of use.

Ingeteam launches hybrid inverter

The Spanish company Ingeteam presented a hybrid inverter, central and string, called mini central inverter. It connects to a single 300 kW cable, rather than the 32 cables required for 300 kW in a string inverter.

Mounted on an inclined plane with multiple units, it can reach 8.4 MW. By reducing the number of cables needed, the product also reduces construction costs by facilitating cabling throughout the structure.

Batteries are on the rise at Intersolar Europe

Harry Schmelzer, sales manager at WEG, is present at the fair to follow the news and trends for the solar and energy storage market. The executive spoke with the Solar Channel and commented on his impressions of the event and the market.

Schemelzer stated that the event is full of news in batteries, electric vehicle chargers, modules moving towards more competitive prices and with more attractive technology. According to him, the market is already talking about utility scale. He also commented that good values in batteries and modules are driving the market. 

Sunova and Solenso launch joint venture

Sunova/Thornova Solar and Solenso entered into a partnership and launched the ALP (Advanced Lasting Photovoltaics) joint venture at Intersolar Europe, which is dedicated to providing advanced photovoltaic modules for various applications. According to the manufacturer, ALP currently offers its ALP 3 module with snow load resistance of up to 8,000Pa, hail tests and is fire resistant. 

Shenzhen launches lithium iron battery with 153.6 Wh capacity

Shenzhen Tramsmart presented its latest launch at Intersolar, the WalkingBoy, a lithium iron phosphate battery weighing just 2.1 kg (LiFePO4), with a capacity of 153.6 Wh. This battery can be charged either using a solar panel or directly from the electrical grid.

Conferences at Intersolar Europe

Last Tuesday (18), the congress part began. Many contents were discussed about energy storage. The pressure in Europe for decarbonization is very great, and the entry of solar and wind energy is fundamental.

On the European continent, they are also facing difficulties with transmission line restrictions. Many investor plants are suffering from constrained-off, and battery storage, mainly, is seen as a key point to solving such problems. 

Constrained-off is the term used to describe events in which the electrical energy generation operation is temporarily limited or interrupted due to specific operational restrictions in a plant or set of projects.

Among the highlighted panels was one on digitalization in control and monitoring in the operation and maintenance of power parks utility scale. The professionals present at the scene commented that in Europe there is great concern regarding the subject.

Because of this, several tools are being developed, as the big question is how to anticipate problems and act proactively before the plant stops generating energy, for example. Therefore, they discussed big data, artificial intelligence and neural networks so that models identify problems as early as possible.
