A EDP Brasil produced, last Thursday (15), the first H2V molecule (green hydrogen) in its new generation unit located in São Gonçalo do Amarante, in the Ceará.
According to the company, the development of the plant is a important milestone for the generation of clean energy in the country and is part of EDP's energy transition commitments.
The production of the molecule is the first strategic stage in the development of the H2 Pilot Project at the Pecém Thermoelectric Complex (UTE Pecém), whose official launch will take place in January 2023. With an investment of R$ 42 million, the unit is the first in the state and the first for the EDP Group.
EDP's green hydrogen plant (Pecém H2V) is a Research & Development project at UTE Pecém that should generate clean fuel, in addition to developing a roadmap with analysis of scalability scenarios, considering all links in the hydrogen production chain .
According to the company, the project includes a solar plant with a capacity of 3 MW and a state-of-the-art electrolyser module for the production of fuel guaranteed to be of renewable origin, with the capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of gas.
The initiative included important partnerships such as Hytron, an electrolysis supplier, and as project executors, in addition to EDP, are the GESEL group, which evaluated scenarios for the scalability of H2 production, identifying the economic, sectoral and market viability of the project. ; IATI, with the technical feasibility study and ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).
“We chose the Pecém complex to house our first green hydrogen plant because we recognize that Ceará has strategic characteristics to lead the introduction of H2V in the country, whether due to its exceptional solar and wind potential – fundamental for gas production – or due to its location and excellent infrastructure offer for the flow of this product to the international market”, stated João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP Brasil.
“Even more important than the production of the first molecule is the experience that this initiative will bring to EDP. With the knowledge acquired, we will be able to contribute more assertively to expanding the production of green hydrogen in the country and also to regulating the segment”, he concluded.
