Brazil closed the first half of this year with the installation of 1.32 GW of solar power. This is the largest amount ever recorded in the history of the period, according to data collected by the Solar Channel with ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The volume of solar power recorded in the year is around 4% greater than that recorded in the same period in 2020, when 1.27 GW were computed in the Agency's system between January 1st and June 30th.

The data even shows that solar generation numbers get higher with each new first half of the year. To give you an idea, the volume of installed power, between January and June this year, is 135% and 842% greater than in relation to the same period in 2019 (0.56 GW) and 2018 (0.14 GW), respectively.

In the opinion of Leandro Martins, president of Ecori Energia Solar, the numbers obtained in the period were extremely positive. “We are sure that this sector will continue to expand at high levels. And, from now until the end of the year, more than 2 GW will be connected and appear in ANEEL statistics too”, he believes.

Among Brazilian regions, the one that installed the most solar power in the first half of this year was the Southeast, with around 0.49 GW. Next, they appear: Northeast (0.28 GW); South (0.23 GW); Midwest (0.22 GW) and North (0.1 GW), respectively.

Among consumption classes, Brazilian homes had the highest volumes of installed power, with 0.65 GW, around 50% of the total. Commercial enterprises and rural properties also stand out in this regard, with 0.37 GW and 0.19 GW, respectively.

The data also reveals that more than 131.5 thousand units of solar DG were introduced into the Brazilian system between January and June, which represents an increase of 33.5% compared to the same period last year, when 98.5 thousand units have been installed.

Investments

According to projections by ABSOLAR (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association), the sum of new private investments in solar energy is expected to surpass the barrier of R$ 22.6 billion this year, an increase of around 75% in relation to the R$ 13 billion that were injected in the sector in 2020.

The entity also estimates that the photovoltaic sector should generate more than 147 thousand jobs throughout the national territory in 2021. The prospect is to end the year with an accumulated total of 377 thousand jobs in the country since 2012, with the majority of this portion going to the DG segment, with 118 thousand new jobs.
