O MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) reached an agreement with the Spanish company Iberdrola, which controls the Neoenergia in Brazil, with the objective of decarbonizing electricity generation on the island of Fernando de Noronha (FOOT).

The company plans to invest R$ 350 million to install solar panels with batteries in the locality aiming replace the island's current supply system, which is based on thermoelectric diesel.

According to the ministry, thereThe initial idea of the project is to install photovoltaic technology on the roofs of homes and local constructions. With this, the federal agency understands that the measure can provide a double gain from the investment.

On the one hand, it will have the image of decarbonization on the island, which is recognized as a Natural Ecological Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). On the other hand, it is committed to reducing electricity bills for residents of the region.

Currently, around Electric Power 10% consumed in Fernando de Noronha comes from the generation of two solar energy plants: Noronha I and Noronha II.

A The first of them was opened in 2017, in the Air Force Command, with a total of 1,644 photovoltaic modules. The installation has an installed power of 400 kW and generation of 600 MWh/year.

Already the Noronha II plant was opened in 2018, with 1,836 solar modules installed in a concrete area of 8 thousand square meters. The system has an installed power of 550 kW and generation of 800 MWh/year.
