Data from ABSOLATE (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association) indicate that Brazil added 4 GW of solar energy power in its energy matrix in first quarter of 2024. This value includes the GC plants (centralized generation) and G.D. (distributed generation).

In the last week, the country surpassed the mark 41GW of installed capacity. The entity states that, since 2012, more than 1.2 million jobs were generated and more than R$ 195 billion were invested. Currently, the Photovoltaics represents 17.4% of Brazilian electrical matrix.

According to calculations by ABSOLAR, solar has already avoided the emission of 50.1 million tons of CO2 in electricity generation. Furthermore, the sector has also raised more than R$ 58.6 billion to public coffers since 2012.

For Ronaldo Koloszuk, president of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR, Brazil's rise in the global energy transition is largely driven by the expansion of solar photovoltaic generation. “The gain in scale, increased efficiency and cutting-edge technological evolution make solar energy one of the main vectors of sustainable transformation in Brazil and the world”, he comments.

Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR, highlights that the energy transition, driven by photovoltaic technology, contributes to social, economic and environmental development, in all spheres of society. “In addition to accelerating the decarbonization of economic activities and helping to combat global warming, solar sources play an increasingly strategic role in the competitiveness of productive sectors, energy independence and prosperity of nations”, he explains.

Centralized generation

In the GC segment, which represents large plants, Brazil has 13 GW. In total, since 2012, there have been around R$ 56 billion in investments and more than 390 thousand jobs created.

Distributed generation

Regarding distributed generation, the country reached 28GW of solar energy power in the first week of April. GD represents around R$ 139.2 billion in investments, R$ 41.7 billion in revenue and more than 841 thousand jobs accumulated in the period.
