The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, gave more details about the Amazon decarbonization program, to be released in July.

During a forum in Lisbon, Portugal, he said that the objective is to reduce diesel oil power generation for 40% in the Amazon region by 2026, replacing it for the solar energy and biodiesel.

By 2030, the goal is for oil-fired thermoelectric plants to produce only 20% of the demand of 212 isolated systems. “We are going to launch the biggest decarbonization program on the planet.”

“We will make a transition from energy exclusively to diesel oil from isolated systems in the Amazon”, highlighted Silveira, last Monday (26). Last week, the minister had already announced that the program would receive R$ 5 billion in investment.

In the Legal Amazon, around 3 million people are served by isolated systems, most of them residential consumers, according to data from EPE (Energy Research Company). These demand is supplied mainly by diesel oil thermoelectric plants.

Power generation in these regions is more expensive due to the logistics of transporting fuel. To prevent energy costs from becoming high for this portion of the population, generation costs are shared among all consumers in the country.

The energy consumed in isolated systems is covered by the Fuel Consumption Account (CCC), which this year will cost around R$ 12 billion.

Despite the high value, the consumption of isolated systems represents 0.6% of national consumption and the population of these locations represents only 1.4% of the total Brazilian population.

According to CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber), the state of Amazonas accounts for 75% of the CCC's annual budget, Roraima for 11% and Pará for 6%. The remainder is distributed across Rondônia, Acre and Amapá.

  1. There are no longer any reasons to use a fossil fuel generator, right in the heart of Amazonas, where the federal government's intention is to adopt environmentally friendly technological solutions. The resources from the Amazon fund need to be used without hesitation with the adoption of renewable energies, the highlights being wind and solar. Increasingly, when it comes to solar, technological innovations have an extraordinary voluptuous effect on both the solar panels and the heart of the system, which are the inverters. The best solution for isolated environments is hybrid, that is, with the incorporation of bars that have also been presenting excellent technological solutions. See the progress of lithium ion batteries. Quantum batteries that will be charged in a matter of minutes are already being extensively researched. The developed world also sees solar as an excellent alternative to reducing the generation of gases that worsen the greenhouse effect. The expansion of photovoltaic energy is a movement with no return and, therefore, inexorable.
