The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, said that the government will be strict in the process of renewing 20 distribution concessions with contracts expiring until 2031.

“We cannot admit that companies that do not have efficient management continue to participate in renewal processes or that exclusively seek the solution of this process in the corridors of ANEEL and MME”, he told CNN this Monday (8).

The government intends to open a public consultation to discuss the issue with society. According to Silveira, there is a great complaint from the population regarding the quality of services provided by distributors and, therefore, the government has an obligation to encourage companies to make more investments.

“I can publicly state that any company that is not in the economic and technical conditions to continue providing services to the Brazilian people will not participate in the concession renewal process.”

During the interview, the minister cited Light (RJ) and Amazonas Energia as examples of lack of administrative efficiency.

“We will look with extremely vigilant eyes at companies that, like Light and Amazonas, are experiencing management difficulties that could put at risk the quality of public services for the entire population of Rio de Janeiro and Amazonas, and for other companies that have management problems. The MME will be extremely strict”, he stated.

The renewal model designed by the government should not provide for the payment of amounts to the Union. However, it will be required to increase investments, improve the quality of services provided, as well as social counterparts, such as investing in energy efficiency through equipment exchanges in homes.
