The president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, committed to invest R$ 30 million in a pilot plant green hydrogen in Brasilia. Neoenergia, a subsidiary of the Spanish Iberdrola, will be responsible for the construction of the project, with expected to open in 2025. The future green hydrogen plant will produce the renewable gas for fueling vehicles such as buses and cars, and will operate with the energy of a 150 MWp photovoltaic plant.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, who was in Spain on Monday (24/6) to meet with Galán and visit the Puertollano plant, destined for the production of nitrogen fertilizers.
“This visit was very important because in addition to learning about the operation of the hydrogen plant here in Spain, I also secured with the global executive president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, R$ 30 million for the pioneering research and development (R&D) project of the hydrogen plant. H2V that will be inaugurated in Brasília. Hydrogen will be a great differentiator for the country to develop and stand out in this production”, said the minister.
According to the ministry, the Puertollano plant, which has been operating since 2022, is the largest of its kind in Europe, consisting of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar park, a set of lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and a 20 MW green hydrogen production system through electrolysis. Everything is made from renewable 100% sources.
In addition to meeting with Ignacio Galán, the minister also met with the CEO of Neoenergia, Eduardo Capelastegui. A Neoenergia has five cooperation agreements with governments and companies for low-carbon green hydrogen projects in Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul and Rio de Janeiro.
“With investments in green hydrogen, associated with investments in transmission lines, we have already managed to guarantee more than R$ 25 billion invested from Neoenergia, which will bring more and more development, employment and income and help to consolidate Brazil as a world leader in the Transition energy”, concluded Alexandre Silveira.
