After three consecutive months of low volumes, still under the impact of the effects of the pandemic on the economy, the amount of imported solar modules rose again in September, with more than 530 MW of products cleared in the month.
The survey carried out by JCS Consultoria e Serviços, a research company on the photovoltaic sector, showed that, with the September result, the third quarter closed with an accumulated volume of 987.38 MW, taking the annual consolidated volume to almost 3.5 GW of panels imported solar panels.
“The result is significant in a year of challenges in the global production chain and market demand, especially when compared to the total imported in 2019, which reached 4.1 GW, reinforcing that photovoltaic energy has found a special vocation for its growth in the country ”, highlighted Wladimir Janousek, specialist in renewable energy.
The study also indicated that imports of bifacial modules represented 47% of this month's total volume, with an evident acceleration in demand from large-scale generation projects and driven by the resumption of plant installation activities.
Average power also showed a significant increase in September, rising from 370 W to 393 W. “This confirms that the development of products with greater energy efficiency is inevitable and is fully supported by developers and consumers. This month, we had the first imports of modules with power equal to or greater than 500 W, still on a small scale, with just over 0.5 MW, but confirming the projections of entry into the era of superpowers”, emphasized Janousek.
Imports by cell type
The research also showed that, for the first time in the year, monthly imports of modules with monocrystalline cells exceeded the imported volume of polycrystalline modules, confirming the trends towards large-scale adoption of the technology, due to its performance and the reduction in price differences between technologies.
Full and Half-Cells
Another piece of data that proves the massive adoption of Half-Cell products, according to a survey by JCS Consultoria e Serviços, is their participation in the volume of imports in September, with almost 80% of the total.
Import of monocrystalline modules grows in the 1st semester
In the first six months of this year, the Brazilian solar market imported 1.10 GWp of monocrystalline modules, an increase of 450% compared to the first half of 2019, when 198 MWp were imported.
Monocrystalline panels corresponded to 45% of imports in the solar sector from January to June 2020, almost doubling the total numbers in 2019, which, adding January to December, was 24%.
