The demand for solar panel installations in homes, facades and land tripled in the capital of São Paulo in 2021 compared to 2020, according to data computed by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

The number of new connections increased from 756 in 2020 to 2,113 in 2021, with 793 new consumers in 2020 and 2,198 last year. In terms of installed power, it was 6.9 MW in 2020 and 16.2 MW in 2021.

The demand for the systems occurred during a period in which the electricity bill of consumers in São Paulo increased by around 10%, according to distributors CPFL Paulista and Enel.

Among the causes for this increase is the activation of the highest tariff flags (red and water crisis) for practically the entire last year.

Furthermore, as it is a large metropolis, São Paulo has more people with access to information and purchasing power to embrace technology.

State of São Paulo

In the State of São Paulo, second in the national ranking of photovoltaic generation, the number of new connections installed in solar DG (Generation Distribution) has doubled in the last two years, passing from 32,243 to 70,165. In terms of installed power was 333.8 MW in 2020 and 563.3 MW in 2021.

For the coming years, the sector's expectation is that the The use of solar sources in São Paulo and other municipalities in the country grows even more, considering the scenario of new increases in the electricity bill expected for 2022 and which will serve to pay for the use of thermoelectric plants.
