The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Monday (8) Resolutions No. 1, 2 and 3 that define the functioning of the Steering Committee of Pró-Amazônia Legal – Structural Cost Reduction Program Energy Generation in the Legal Amazon and Navigability of the Madeira River and the Tocantins River.

The program, which seeks to reduce energy costs in the Amazon, was regulated by Decree No. 11,059/22, as provided for in Law No. 14,182/21.

According to the law, for ten years, R$ 295 million will be contributed annually by Eletronorte to implement projects that structurally reduce the costs of generating electricity supported by the Fuel Consumption Account (CCC).

The resources must also be applied to implementing measures that improve the navigability of the Madeira River and Tocantins River. The resources arise from the Eletrobras privatization process.

Around three million inhabitants served by isolated systems, in Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia and Roraima, will benefit from the Pró-Amazônia Legal Program.

The president of the Committee will be the Secretary of Planning and Energy Transition, Thiago Barral, who will also have two more representatives from the MME; a representative from the Ministry of Ports and Airports; a representative of States that have isolated systems, elected by the National Forum of State Secretaries of Mines and Energy; a representative of energy distributors, appointed by Abradee (Brazilian Association of Electricity Distributors); and a representative of consumers from states with Isolated Systems, indicated by Conacen (National Council of Electric Energy Consumers).

This Monday, the second meeting of the Committee was held. The first was on February 6th and the next ones will be on August 7th and November 6th, 2023.

The MME chose the 111 locations in the Isolated Systems eligible to benefit from the Program. “The ordering of locations identified in the approved ranking must be applied to projects that present solutions that promote the integration of Isolated Systems and Remote Regions into the National Interconnected System.” Click here to check the order of the 111 locations.
