The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, said that the government will launch a program in July to replace diesel electricity generation with renewable sources in the Amazon.

According to him, 'it will be the largest decarbonization program in the world'. Investments of around R$ 5 billion are planned.

“Next July, at the inauguration of the Parintins (AM) interconnection, which will be attended by President Lula, we will launch the Decarbonization of the Amazon program, the largest decarbonization program in the world, which will be one of the largest sustainability programs, around R$ 5 billion will be invested in this important initiative,” he said.

“This program will replace diesel generation, which currently costs CCC, with clean and renewable energy in more than 200 systems in our Amazon”, he said during virtual participation in the 20th edition of Enase (National Meeting of Electrical Sector Agents) , which takes place in Rio de Janeiro”, he added.

The CCC (Fuel Consumption Bill) is a charge paid by all electricity consumers to subsidize the annual energy generation costs of Isolated Systems, that is, areas that are not connected to the SIN (National Interconnected System).

The minister also said that in July, at the next meeting of the CNPE (National Energy Policy Council), the National Energy Transition Policy will be presented.

“And in this process of advancing towards the energy transition, let’s not forget those who need it most. In addition to combating energy poverty with the relaunch of the Light for All program, we will have the necessary courage to correct asymmetries in the sector, protecting the poorest in the process. With this, we will leverage our load, creating an economic environment for new investments in the Brazilian electricity sector”, he said.

Silveira also said that the government will propose a “major milestone for the sector”, with the aim of reducing asymmetries for all consumers.

“We call on everyone to, together, ensure the strengthening of the electricity sector. Let's unite in favor of a great national agreement to protect those who need it most and correct the many distortions in the electricity sector. All this with dedication, dialogue, to guarantee the legal security and regulatory stability that are so necessary to attract new investments, especially long-term ones”, he stated.
