Minister Alexandre Silveira, governor of Ceará, Elmano de Freitas, and the CEO of EDP, João Marques da Cruz.

O Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, said that he will promote a ambitious energy policy for the development of the economy of hydrogen in Brazil, with focus in improve legal and regulatory frameworks, reduce investment barriers, accelerate technological development, reduce costs and create jobs.

“We will unite the exceptional renewable profile of our electrical matrix and our enviable interconnected system with our thriving bioenergy industry and our oil and gas industry and its gigantic capacity for innovation and investment, to make Brazil one of the most competitive countries in the hydrogen economy. We will not miss this window of opportunity”, he reinforced.

The minister participated this Thursday (19) in the launch of the first green hydrogen molecule on scale in Latin America, produced by the company EDP Brasil. The plant has investments of R$ 42 million and is part of the Pecém Complex, in Ceará.

O Hydrogen has great potential in the energy transition and the quest for carbon neutrality by 2050 in Brazil, aligned with Brazil's climate commitment in the Paris Agreement.

The technology makes it possible to accelerate the supply of clean energy in structures where fossil fuels are still needed today. Several countries have encouraged investments in low-carbon hydrogen and Brazil has one of the greatest business potentials in this area.

“The energy transition agenda will have absolute priority in my management at the head of the ministry, due to the importance of this topic for the social, economic and industrial development of our country, and for our international contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the scope of of the Paris agreement”, stated the minister.

Silveira Silveira recalled that hydrogen is one of the priority areas defined by the CNPE (National Energy Policy Council) for the allocation of resources for research and development and that the MME will have the support of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), the ANP (National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels), and other ministries, such as Science, Technology and Innovation, Education, and Industry. The minister also highlighted that he will work in line with the National Congress on the sector's agendas.

The minister also recalled that the MME will use contributions from society received through open public consultation on the government's hydrogen policy and initiate a broad dialogue to strengthen the national industry and the green economy in Brazil.

“I am also excited to see the appetite for investment in clean energy from companies here in Brazil. At MME, I want to work in partnership with companies, the productive sector and social movements to guarantee Brazil's leading role in the development of markets for low-carbon technologies”, he concluded.

The plant

The green hydrogen production plant is part of the Pecém H2V Research & Development project, and consists of a solar plant with a capacity of 3 MWp and a state-of-the-art electrolyzer module for fuel production, with capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of the gas.

The inauguration of the unit is a milestone for the generation of renewable energy in the country and is part of EDP's commitments to the energy transition.

“Ceará has strategic characteristics to lead the process of introducing green hydrogen in the country, whether due to its solar and wind potential – fundamental for the production of gas in a renewable manner – or due to its location and infrastructure offering for the flow of this product to international market”, says João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP in Brazil
