O MDA (Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Farming) signed a series of partnerships with universities for bring electricity to families in the interior of Brazil in a sustainable way.

Among them are the agreements made with the UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), USP (University of Sao Paulo) It is UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) for research of solar energy models.

Partners include lgathering data on execution conditions, ccreation of indicators and preparation of public policy proposals for rural families.

The searches will result in models for the installation of equipment on properties or in family farming cooperatives.

According to data from IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), the Brazil became the 8th largest solar energy generator in the world in 2023, ahead of nations such as Spain, France and Correio do Sul.

Despite this, the country still has 235,747 family farming establishments without access to electricity., according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

“This is an opportunity to overcome several challenges: increase the quality of life in the countryside, encourage the rural and industrial economy, and contribute to combating climate change” explains Moisés Savian, secretary of Land Governance, Territorial and Socio-environmental Development at MDA.

The executive also highlights that one of the concerns is to increase the level of industrialization and added value of family farming production to generate jobs and income in a sustainable way.

“We believe that the energy matrix is fundamental for development, and solar energy brings answers to many challenges”, he added.

According to the MDA, one of the ways to increase access to structures and equipment with solar energy for family farming is to expand access to credit for financing in this sector.

Currently, the Harvest Plan of Family Agriculture, for example, already has specific lines for financing photovoltaic energy equipment.
