The Southeast region of Brazil, formed by the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, reached the mark of 3 GW of installed power in solar DG (distributed generation).

The location is the first of the five regions in Brazil to reach the mark, according to information gathered by Canal Solar, based on data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency).

Currently, there are 367.9 thousand UCs (Consumer Units) receiving credits in the region and more than 297.3 thousand photovoltaic plants installed in 1,658 municipalities (99.4% of the total).

In the same period last year, when the Southeast had not even reached 2 GW, there were 191,700 UCs and 240,200 systems installed in homes, rural areas, companies, commercial establishments and government headquarters.

Among the states that make up the region, the one with the largest solar power installed in solar DG is Minas Gerais, with 1.47 GW, followed by São Paulo (1.05 GW); Rio de Janeiro (0.32 GW) and Espírito Santo (0.14 GW).

Regarding consumption classes, residential is the one that occupies the first position in ANEEL's regional ranking, with just over 1.27 GW of installed power. Next, the commercial (1.05 GW), rural (0.44 GW) and industrial (0.19 GW) classes appear.

Installed power in solar DG by region*:

  • Southeast: 3.00 GW;
  • South: 1.92GW;
  • North East: 1.60 GW;
  • Midwest: 1.33GW;
  • North: 0.49 GW.

Year-by-year evolution

A solar energy experienced a historic year in 2021 with records in the expansion of the source throughout Brazil. In the Southeast region, the situation was no different. Between January and December, more than 1.26 GW of solar DG were installed, which corresponds to more than 40% of the total volume of 3 GW. This is a higher rate than in the last two years: 0.97 GW in 2020 and 0.54 MW in 2019.

Installed power in solar DG in the last five years in the Southeast*:

  • 2021: 1.26GW;
  • 2020: 0.97GW;
  • 2019: 0.54 GW;
  • 2018: 0.14GW;
  • 2017: 0.05 GW.
