The Brazilian company UCB Power, specialized in energy storage, plans to invest R$ 380 million by 2028 to expand its manufacturing operations in the city of Extrema (MG). According to the manufacturer, the objective is the local and dedicated manufacturing of solutions from the UBESS line (UCB Battery Energy Storage System).
The amount must be invested in two phases and has the support of Invest Minas, investment promotion agency of the Government of Minas Gerais, and the Government of the State of Minas Gerais through tax incentives and financing of special credit lines.
During the first phase, planned for the period 2024-25, resources will be directed to current factory expansion in Extrema (MG). In the second phase, scheduled between 2025-26, land will be rented to accommodate increased production, marking the creation of the company's third factory in Brazil.
In addition to the unit in Extrema (MG), the UCB Power also has a battery factory in Manaus (AM), where part of the production will be used for scale BESS solutions.
“We believe in the Brazilian market and the evolution of energy storage demands in various segments, from photovoltaic plants to automotive batteries. The expansion of our facilities and the maturation of the market will be important factors for the consolidation of the storage sector in the country. With the investment in the necessary electrical infrastructure, we will have a more sustainable, dynamic and electrified economy”, he states George Fernandes, CEO of UCB Power.
“The initial phase will allow us to establish essential operations and optimize final processes, ensuring quality and efficiency in production. This way, we will be able to plan the next and important step in expanding our production capacity with more security and assertiveness”, he adds. Marcelo Rodrigues, Vice President of Business and Innovation at UCB Power.
Still according to Rodrigues, the first stage still has the purpose of validate market evolution and reaction and the demand for UCB Power products. He further points out that this strategic focus will allow you to dynamically adjust the production according to market response, mitigating risks and ensuring that the operation is aligned with the specific needs of customers.
Generation of employment and stimulation of research
The company estimates that, with all the investment to expand its operations and meet the growing demand for storage solutions, until the project is completed, approximately 400 job vacancies.
In addition to creating jobs, UCB Power will also stimulate research. This is because the company will invest in a Product Engineering Laboratory focusing on after-sales, aiming to meet the demands for BESS equipment, which will also have the role of consolidating partnerships with universities and local teaching and research centers.
