UFR now has two solar energy generation complexes with capacity to produce approximately 220 MWh per month

The second photovoltaic plant at UFR (Federal University of Rondonópolis) began operating. Now, the institution has two solar energy generation complexes with capacity to produce approximately 220 MWh per month.

The plant has a total of 3,622 photovoltaic modules, arranged in a territory of 25 thousand m² of built area. The plant has 1.81 MWp. A third small plant is scheduled to be installed later this year, as a result of another public call from the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) Energy Efficiency Program.

In a note, the Rector of UFR, professor Analy Polizel de Souza, paid tribute to the memory of his friend and professional colleague, Renato Tillmann Bassini, who passed away in 2021. The professor was linked to the Mechanical Engineering course since 2011 and was the first secretary of UFR infrastructure.

“We owe a lot to Professor Renato’s exemplary work. It was his dream to see these plants completed and fully operational. Today, we finally fulfill this wish in his honor and for the benefit of our entire academic community”, declared Professor Analy.

With the start of operation of the Photovoltaic Plant II, the energy generated by the two plants will supply a large part of the institution's consumption. According to UFR, the plant is one of the largest projects of its kind among all educational institutions in the country. In 2019, UFGD (Federal University of Grande Dourados) announced its own plant, with generation capacity of up to 1.12 MWp.

According to the UFGD Social Communication Office, this was, at the time, “the largest photovoltaic solar energy plant among the public sectors in Brazil”. In 2020, UFPR (Federal University of Paraná) claimed the title of largest solar plant among universities in the country, with the implementation of 2,376 panels installed in an area of 7 thousand m² on the institution's parking lot.

In 2021, it was the turn of the University of Brasília to declare the “largest electricity generation plant in federal universities” with the construction of 11 mini solar energy generation plants distributed across its four campuses with generation of 1.17 MWp.
