ABRACEEL (Brazilian Association of Electric Energy Traders) released two important documents this week: one with the aim of promoting a debate on the opening of the free energy market and the other with guidance for consumers who intend to participate in this environment from 2024 onwards.

Called Pre-Agenda, this document consolidates a series of studies and research on the free market carried out by the association over the years.

In Brazil, only 0.04% of the almost 90 million electricity consumers can choose their supplier. This is because there are a series of regulatory barriers that prevent the expansion of this service.

According to ABRACEEL, the complete opening of the Brazilian energy market in 2026 has the potential to generate savings of 18% on the electricity bill.

In fact, being able to choose a supplier is something desired by around 8 out of 10 Brazilians when asked about the right to portability of their electricity bill, just as happens in telephony.

This desire can be explained by the constant increases in residential consumer energy tariffs which, between 2015 and 2022, rose 70%, against an IPCA of 58% in the same period. On the other hand, the cost of energy on the free market showed an average variation of just 9% over the last 8 years.

Free consumer guide

The other document released by ABRACEEL was the new edition of the Free Energy Market Handbook. In it, consumers can find a series of useful information that can help clarify how this energy trading environment works.

The update is in line with the process of expanding the free market, which from next year will allow all high voltage consumers to choose their energy supplier.

Today, only consumers with demand above 500 kilowatts can have this benefit. According to the CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber), this level is equivalent to an electricity bill of R$ 140 thousand on average. From 2024, consumers with accounts starting from R$ 10 thousand will be able to be free.

There are currently just over 35 thousand consumers on the free market. CCEE estimates that 24 thousand units will migrate next year. ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) reported that around 8 thousand have already formalized their migration requests.

In the booklet, the consumer will find around 20 answers about how the free market works, what benefits it provides and what the consumer needs to do to participate in this commercial environment. Click here to access.
