Adalberto Maluf Filho took office this Wednesday (22) as National Secretary of Urban Environment and Environmental Quality, of Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The appointment was published in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) on Tuesday (21), after choosing the minister Marina Silva.

In an interview with Solar Channel, Maluf explained that the main objective of the Urban Environment and Environmental Quality secretariat is to help the Ministry act increasingly closer to cities, in the development of sustainable urban mobility, popular housing, adaptation to climate change and also the topic of clean energy.

“The minister made it a priority for Brazil to have a slightly broader energy transition plan, who understands all the benefits, environmental, social and economic costs of all energy sources and all fuels so that it is possible to think about a long-term Brazil. These are the minister’s guidelines and this is an area in which she asked me to work a lot”, he reported.

“The Ministry of the Environment wants to work in cooperation with the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Ministry of Industry in the energy transition, from the point of view of clean fuels, renewable energy and green industry”, he pointed out

Asked about plans for the electric mobility, Maluf commented that the ministry mainly thinks about decarbonization of transport in cities.

“Regarding electrification, it is important to highlight the potential for expanding biofuels, in addition to the electrification of urban mobility and freight transport. The ministry has the prerogative to think about the decarbonization of transport and mobility in cities and, in our opinion, decarbonization involves expanding low-carbon public transport, increasing the use of biofuel, especially ethanol, and the transition from combustion production park for ethanol and battery plug-in, prioritizing hybrid, flex and plug-in electric vehicles. We need to densify the lithium and semiconductor chain, generating innovations and clean technologies in Brazil.”

To take office as secretary, Maluf left his position as director of BYD and will soon leave the presidency of ABVE (Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association).

Adalberto Maluf served, for seven years, as director of the Clinton Climate Initiative Foundation, together with the C40 network, of large cities around the world committed to the fight against environmental issues. Last year, he was a candidate for federal deputy for the PV (Green Party).
