With the popularization of EVs (electric vehicles), the use of electric vehicle chargers is growing in commercial and residential installations.

However, the household electricity grid needs to support the additional load when using an electric vehicle charger, as the consumption of charging stations is relatively large.

If no special care is used, charging an electric vehicle can overload the installation and reduce the power available for local use.

In response to this security problem, the DLB (Dynamic Load Balancing) function emerged, provided by equipment called DLB Box.

Explanation of the DLB concept

The DLB is available for use with AC charging stations for home use.

When the vehicle charger is operating with other household appliances at the same time, the DLB Box can maintain the dynamic balance of the total current at the installation input, to prevent overload, and ensure the safety of the internal electricity supply.

The DLB must be configured with the maximum current value allowed at the input of the consumer unit.

The charger will read this current value and automatically adjust the charging current (6 A – 32 A) according to the idle availability of the electrical installation, so that the installation is not overloaded.

This function allows you to effectively use the existing power supply, without requiring an increase in demand or reinforcement of the electrical installation – and at the same time without compromising the service of pre-existing loads.

A BENY is committed to continually improving the advantages of its products and optimizing the customer experience.

After collecting feedback from many customers and conducting in-depth market research, BENY launched the PV DLB Box and developed new modes for the standard DLB Box.

Explanation of the new BENY DLB Box mode

  1. Standard PV/DLB: The vehicle charger can be combined with the DLB Box to achieve load balancing functions. There are many types of DLB Box, including standard DLB Box and PV DLB Box. Standard DLB Box can perform dynamic load balancing to avoid installation overload. On the other hand, PV DLB Box can realize priority use of photovoltaic power generation and reduce the use of power grid energy;
  2. Extreme Mode: DLB Extreme Mode for a non-smart charger can be activated by configuring DIP switches on the equipment. For a smart charger, the mode can be activated through in-app configuration. In this mode, when the charging current is less than 6 A, the charger will stop charging. When the charging current is greater than or equal to 10 A, the charger will resume charging;
  3. Night automatic full speed mode: we can set automatic night mode through an application. Within this mode, the charger will continue charging at maximum speed (from 8:00 pm at night to 6:00 am in the morning).

Application scenarios of the new modes

Normal DLB

Extreme Mode

OFF

1. DLB limits the charger current range to between 6A and 32A.

2. When the current is reduced to 6 A, if the consumer unit's power circuit breaker is still overloaded, the charger will maintain a charging current of 6 A.

Normal DLB

Extreme Mode

ABOUT

1. DLB limits the charger current range to between 6A and 32A.

2. When the current is reduced to 6A, if the input circuit breaker is still overloaded, the charger will suspend charging.

3. When the input circuit breaker has a trip of 10 A, charging will resume.

PV DLB

Full speed automatic night mode

OFF

1. The charger works in pure PV mode and full speed automatic night mode is not activated.

2. When night comes, the charger will only maintain a minimum charging current of 6A.

PV DLB

Full speed automatic night mode

ABOUT

1. EV charger works in pure PV mode, full speed automatic night mode is enabled.

2. During the night the charger will operate at maximum speed, with the maximum available current.

The difference between using DLB mode with a non-smart charger and a smart charger

Non-Smart EV Charger: only 1 phase. If used with a non-smart DLB Box, you can configure the charger to activate Extreme Mode. If used with a PV DLB Box, you cannot activate full speed automatic night mode.

Smart EV Charger: single-phase and three-phase. The single-phase charger is used with the single-phase DLB Box and the three-phase charger is used with the three-phase DLB Box. And DLB Normal's Extreme Mode and PV DLB's Night Auto Full Speed Mode can be activated via the Z-BOX app.

The app and charger are connected via a Bluetooth module to realize the control function. Downloading new firmware via Bluetooth/WIFI can update the charger program to the new version.
