Copel and ANEEL test the use of batteries to guarantee energy supply

A Copel and the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) carried out a test of a system with batteries in an isolated microgrid for to fuel the facilities of company in the Atuba neighborhood, in Curitiba (PR). During the experiment, the system provided energy to the site by two hours

The initiative integrates a program in R&D (research and development) of ANEEL, which aims to test the operation of four systems of large storage in different regions of state. In total, the company invested R$ 34.6 million in the initiative.

To the batteries were installed in two trailers with a total of 50 tons and can be transported to to meet the population in any location.

The system, which has 1 MW of power with capacity in storage greater than 1 MWh, is composed of batteries in lithium, an energy converter, a transformer to increase the electrical voltage and connection and protection devices. 

The solution is connected The network to strengthen the system during periods of increased demand and to guarantee O supply of energy in case of shutdowns. During the night, when the demand It is smaller, batteries can be recharged with the energy of electrical network.

Other installed systems

In addition to the transportable batteries, the investment made includes the installation of three other storage systems. Each one has a different application that allows Copel to analyze its use in a different scenario.

The company installed two systems at the substation in the municipality of Ipiranga (PR), each of which has a different battery model.

One of the systems uses lithium batteries, the same model tested in Curitiba, and has a capacity of 250 kW and 1,505 kWh of stored energy.

The second system uses flow batteries, a technology that stores energy in liquid, and has a useful life of around 20 years, with 250 kW of power and 1,200 kWh of stored energy. 

The third system consists of a set of batteries with 250 kW capacity and 860 kWh of stored energy and was installed next to a 200 kWp solar power plant, in the city of Pinhão (PR), in the Center-South of the state.

One of the objectives is to evaluate the functioning of batteries in conjunction with a generation system, allowing the possibility of assisting Copel's network and even operating in isolation. 

Furthermore, the site has Copel's smart network, which allows all operations to be monitored by automated equipment, facilitating control and management of the quality of energy supply.
