A fertilizer factory, which will be built in Uberaba (MG) with a total value of US$ 850 million (around R$ 4.3 billion), construction is expected to begin in 2024, with completion scheduled for mid-2027.

The plant will use a matrix from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, for the production of green hydrogen, green ammonia It is nitrogen fertilizers with zero carbon.

O Atlas Agro project is part of the company's strategic plan for decarbonizing the fertilizer industry in Brazil. In total, the space will have a production capacity for 500 thousand tons of fertilizers per year to serve customers in the region.

In addition to this unit, the organization also has plans to build at least six more plants of green nitrogen fertilizers in the country, as explained by Knut Karlsen, co-founder and CEO of Atlas Agro for Latin America.

“We have signed purchase letters of interest with several customers and are expected to conclude supply agreements for zero-carbon nitrogen fertilizers in the coming months,” he said.

To help with the prospecting and selection of renewable energy suppliers for the Uberaba plant, the renewable energy consultancy CELA (Clean Energy Latin America) was hired by Atlas Agro.

According to the company, the project will be a significant milestone for national agribusiness since currently 100% of the nitrogen fertilizer used in the country is imported from other countries, such as Russia, all of which are produced from fossil and polluting sources.

“The new plant is an important step towards replacing foreign fertilizers with a significant carbon footprint with national production from clean and sustainable manufacturing. It also represents a great opportunity for green reindustrialization and food security in Brazil”, points out Karlsen.
