The use of systems solar energy in public responsibility undertakings has become an increasingly present reality in the municipalities that make up the state of Ceará.

Among them are dozens of schools and the new Sobral Regional Airport, in addition to the metro lines and the VLT (light rail vehicle) maintenance center in Fortaleza.

According to the State, currently, 25 public schools in the region are already generating solar energy through a project that also intends to implement the technology in seven other institutions by the end of April.

The estimate is that when all 32 schools have their photovoltaic systems properly installed, savings of approximately R$ 1 million per year will occur in the payment of electricity tariffs.

The resources invested, in the amount of R$ 8.8 million, are from the FIEE (Energy Efficiency and Distributed Generation Incentive Fund of Ceará), administered by Seinfra (Infrastructure Secretariat).

Airports and VLT

In the northern region of the state, the new Sobral Regional Airport, delivered in 2022, has already been designed with a photovoltaic plant, consisting of 560 solar panels. The initiative will guarantee energy for the operation of the passenger terminal and the fire fighting system building.

In the capital Fortaleza, in addition to having another airport with solar energy, the municipality also has a project that will use the source: O VLT maintenance center, which will function as a workshop, as well as a refueling and washing point for trains on the Parangaba-Mucuripe line.

The plant has 655 photovoltaic modules to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of electricity on site. In addition to saving on electricity bills and expanding our own generation capacity, the initiative will contribute to the modernization of electrical installations in public administration bodies.

Subway lines

Still in Fortaleza, the Juscelino Kubitschek and Padre Cícero stations, on the South line of Fortaleza Metro, also have 882 solar panels in operation. The energy generated by the equipment compensates for electrical energy costs at all VLT Parangaba-Mucuripe and Linha Oeste stations, which together total 20 units.

The solar energy generated at the two stations on the South line is transferred to the concessionaire's electrical network, and is then reverted to Metrofor, in the form of credit in electrical production, which implies compensation in the company's energy bills.

This way, the train operator is exempt from electricity bills at the 20 stations. Solar energy production also covers electricity expenses at the two stations where the panels are installed. The annual savings are R$ 415 thousand.

Jaguaretama Valley

At the beginning of this month, the Government of Ceará signed a protocol of intent with executives from SPIC Brasil, to build solar complex in Jaguaretama, a municipality located in Vale do Jaguaribe and located approximately 250 km from Fortaleza.

In total, more than R$ 1 billion will be invested in the 741 hectare complex, which is expected to generate 900 jobs, including 300 direct jobs and 600 outsourced. According to the State, the installed capacity of the complex could reach 292 MWp, enough to supply 350,000 homes.
