According to a report released by IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency), H2V (green hydrogen) can compete on costs with fossil fuels by 2030.
The combination of decreasing prices for solar and wind power, improved performance, as well as economies of scale for electrolyzers could make this possible.
Amid this scenario, there are already some projects in Brazil that are contributing to the global goal of IRENA.
The Northeast, for example, is preparing to receive the first plants to produce and export the fuel.
O Solar Channel Below, we separated five states in the Brazilian Northeast that are betting on H2V. Check out:
Ceará
The Government of Ceará announced, in September, the installation of the pilot project to implement a green hydrogen HUB in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex. The plant will have 3 MW and a state-of-the-art electrolyzer module to produce fuel guaranteed to be of renewable origin. The modular unit will have the capacity to produce 250 Nm3/h of gas.
The multinational EDP do Brasil will make an investment of almost R$ 42 million in the plant, which is expected to come into operation in December 2022. The Port of Pecém already has more than a dozen memorandums of understanding (MOU) from interested companies. Recently, TotalEnergies showed interest and is in the negotiation phase with the state.
large northern river
The Government of large northern river signed, also in September, an MOU with the Rio Grande do Norte company IER (Internacional Energias Renováveis) to develop a project that will combine offshore wind energy with solar and green hydrogen.
According to governor Fátima Bezerra, the objective of the program is to boost these energy sources in the state, which could even become the first in Brazil to have offshore wind production. For the construction of the project, located between the municipalities of Pedra Grande and São Bento do Norte, R$ 18 billion will be invested, generating around 5 thousand jobs.
Bahia
The governor of Bahia, Rui Costa, announced in November that the state will start producing energy from green hydrogen in January 2023. The plant will be installed in Camaçari, by the Unigel group.
According to Costa, the world is seeking to consume more and more energy from clean sources, and Bahia is working to stand out in this segment. He also highlighted that “energy attracts investment”.
Pernambuco
Neoenergia and the Government of Pernambuco signed, in June, an MOU to build cooperation for the development of a pilot H2V production project at the Port of Suape.
The complex has a petrochemical complex, with a strategic location for areas destined for terminals, logistics, services and industries, especially for European and American markets. The agreement will have a term of one year, with the possibility of being extended, and is in line with the strategy of Iberdrola, the Group's controlling shareholder.
Piauí
The governor of Piauí, Wellington Dias, signed it in November, in Scotland, where he participated in the COP 26, a cooperation agreement that guarantees the start of green hydrogen production in the state.
Casa dos Ventos and Nexway will implement in the ZPE (Export Processing Zone) of Parnaíba the pilot project of an ammonia plant to produce H2V, which will be used as vehicle fuel. The companies estimate the generation of 250 kilowatts of hydrogen to move 2 buses in Piauí.
