Electricity consumption increased by 8.5% in December, says EPE

Study says heat waves contributed to increased electricity consumption

O national consumption in electricity in December was from 46,407 GWh, increase in 8,5% in comparison with November in 2022, and by second consecutive month, O bigger consumption of the entire series historical since 2004. Which is pointed The Monthly Review from the EPE (Energy research company).

According to EPE, industrial consumption has advanced and contributes to the rise in electricity. In the last 12 months, national consumption registered 527,073 GWh, an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous period. 

The study states that heat waves contributed to increased electricity consumption. Residential and commercial consumption recorded growth rates exceeding double digits for the second consecutive month.

Industrial Consumption

Industrial consumption totaled 15,968 GWh of electricity, which grew by 3.7% in November, compared to the same period in 2022 and registering the highest rate in the last 24 months.

The Northeast stood out with an increase of (+10.2%), followed by the Central-West (+5.6%), South (+4.0%) and Southeast (+2.8%). Only the North region had a reduction of (-2.6%). The movement towards rising consumption spread throughout the industry in November.

Residential consumption

Regarding the residential class, electricity consumption was 14,787 GWh in November, the highest value ever recorded since the beginning of the EPE historical series in 2004. Consumption increased by 14.2% compared to the same month in 2022. 

According to the study, household consumption was impacted by the use of air conditioning devices, due to the heat and drier climate in much of the country. 

All regions saw an increase in consumption in November compared to the same previous period. The Central-West (+26.1%), North (+25.5%), Southeast (+13.3%), Northeast (+11.0%) and South (+8.6%). 

The ten biggest highlights in consumption expansion occurred in Amapá (+106.8%), Goiás (+31.5%), Roraima (+28.0%), Mato Grosso (+27.8%), Amazonas (+26.5%) , Mato Grosso do Sul (+25.7%), Rondônia (+25.3%), Minas Gerais (+23.6%), Piauí (23.4%) and Tocantins (+20.2%). 

Commercial consumption

Commercial class consumption expanded by 11.2% in November 2023, reaching  8,608 GWh, was the highest recorded consumption value for the class since 2004.

The biggest highlights in the increase in consumption occurred in the Southeast (+13.8%) and North (+13.2%) regions, followed by the South (+9.9%), Central-West (+8.9%) and Northeast (+5 ,0%). Amapá (+23.5%), Espírito Santo (+22.9%), Minas Gerais (+19.0%), Pará (+16.9%), Goiás (+16.6%), Paraná (+15.7%) and Roraima (+15.2%).

Hiring environment

As for the contracting environment, with 18,135 GWh, the free market accounted for 39.8% of national electricity consumption in November, registering a growth of 9.0% in consumption and 22.0% in the number of consumers, compared to November 2022.

The Northeast recorded the greatest expansion in consumption (+17.3%), while the Central-West (+34.4%) in the number of consumers.

According to the monthly review, “in addition to the migration of consumers from the regulated market, the expansion in industrial consumption, especially the most electro-intensive ones, and the free portion of the commercial class also contributed to the result in the free market”.

The captive market of distributors, with 27,925 GWh, accounted for 60.2% of national electricity consumption in November, an increase of 8.1% compared to 2022, while the number of consumer units increased by 2.3% in the period, despite the migration of consumers to the free market.

In the regulated market, the Central-West had the greatest expansion in consumption (+15.9%), while the Northeast (+3.3%) in the number of consumers.
