WEG announced, this Wednesday (16), the supply of four energy storage systems, as well as the development of control of a microgrid fed by various sources for Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia).
Among the products supplied are four BESS (Energy Storage Systems) that include lithium-ion and flux-vanadium batteries, photovoltaic plants, transformers, low and medium voltage panels, plant automation, BMS (Battery Management System) and electrocenters.
Furthermore, part of the contract – which encompasses manufacturing, construction, commissioning, warranty and technical support – is the renewal of the energy generation system on Ilha das Cobras, a remaining area of Atlantic Forest in Paranaguá Bay.
Currently, the plant has a diesel generation system that will be replaced and complemented by a hybrid set of solar generation associated with batteries – which will supply all the energy demanded in the region.

“The construction and development of an intelligent electrical energy microgrid aims to disseminate the use of solar and ensure safety, quality and resilience in the supply of electrical energy on Ilha das Cobras”, highlighted Manfred Peter Johann, superintendent director of WEG Automação.
“The project will also contribute to reducing environmental impacts, as diesel consumption will be eliminated with the use of BESS”, explained Johann.
Implemented projects
According to WEG, one of the programs will be implemented in the municipality of Ipiranga, in Campos Gerais (PR), and will place two systems of 1 MWh each with lithium and flow battery technologies side by side.
Another project is the supply of a transportable energy storage system solution with a capacity of 1 MWh to be connected to the distribution network – in cases of meeting programmed contingencies or meeting seasonal demands with peak consumption.
In addition to this, the photovoltaic system associated with energy storage will be implemented in the Faxinal do Céu Residential Village, in Pinhão, in the Center-South. WEG stated that tests will be carried out with the implementation of a microgrid throughout the village, making it possible to evaluate the combination of new technologies with the topologies used and assess the benefits to consumers.
