Copel Mercado Livre, a subsidiary of Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) for selling energy in the free contracting environment, contracted 162 average MW, for a period of 13 years, with supply starting in January 2023.

The winning enterprises of the Solar and Wind Incentive Energy Purchase Auction, held last Friday (14), total 595 MW of installed capacity, 184 MW of wind energy and 411 MW of solar energy. These are new plants that will still be built to deliver energy to the company.

Franklin Miguel, general director of Copel Mercado Livre, highlighted that this year, amid the pandemic, only the free energy market is responsible for the expansion of generation in the national electricity sector. “In 2020, only Copel and Jirau (Energia Sustentável do Brasil – ESBR) held an auction to purchase energy from new solar and wind projects. This is a sign of the maturity of the free market and of our solidity and preparation for this moment”, he stated.

The public call, launched at the end of 2019, is expected to purchase energy from new projects in three stages. The first was carried out in February 2020, the second ended on Friday and the third, with hiring from 2023 to 2035, is scheduled for the end of 2020.

“This predictability is important for entrepreneurs interested in participating in Copel Mercado Livre auctions. Even with the economic scenario of 2020, the steps were maintained, as we are purchasing energy for the long term. Furthermore, free market consumption has reacted”, highlighted Miguel.
