Evaluate the impacts of using batteries in the electrical system, from generation to the end customer. This is the objective of CPFL Energia, which announced that it has put three energy storage projects into operation.

These deliveries involved an investment of R$ 27 million out of a total of R$ 66 million that will be used. The program began in 2017 and will run until 2022.

According to the company, five battery storage systems of 75 kWh to 2 MWh capacity were installed in a unit of the Graal network, in two residential condominiums, in an energy substation and in a plant at the Campo dos Ventos wind complex, in Rio. Grande do Norte, from CPFL Renováveis.

In the Graal network, for example, the company implemented a storage system with 200 kW/430 kWh lithium batteries, integrated with a diesel generator and two charging stations for vehicle recharging.

At the Barão Geraldo substation, the installation of the 1 MW/2 MWh battery storage project aims to integrate with a distribution feeder, guaranteeing, according to CPFL, greater quality of supply and greater integration of intermittent renewable sources in this network.

Furthermore, an energy storage system using 100 kW/255 kWh batteries was built in a condominium with 47 consumer units, 27 of which have photovoltaic systems.

Other projects

According to the company, a 25 kW/75 kWh storage system was also installed on an energy distribution pole (aerial) serving a residential condominium with solar generation and other consumer units.

At the Campo dos Ventos Wind Complex, the 1 MW/1.29 MWh battery storage project will allow the optimization of intermittent renewable energy production, smoothing the generation curve, the company stated.

“CPFL Energia invests in R&D to accelerate the modernization of the electricity sector and overcome challenges such as the integration of clean solar and wind energy sources. Storage is the main technology that enables these renewable sources in the electrical matrix as it adds flexibility and improves network management, in addition to contributing to the conservation of assets and reduction of consumption peaks”, highlighted Renato Povia, director of Strategy and Innovation at CPFL Energy.
