Total, a French energy company, and Google Cloud, a cloud computing service provided by Google, created Solar Mapper. The platform uses artificial intelligence algorithms to provide faster estimates on photovoltaic system installations.

Using data provided by the algorithms, the tool can indicate the solar potential of the location in question and also point out the most suitable technology for that installation.

According to project developers, the platform, which must be implemented in Europe before being launched worldwide, uses data extracted from satellite images to provide all the information a designer needs and which should speed up the equipment installation process.

Total reported that around 40% of the group's investments are dedicated to low-carbon energy and that, initially, the tool will only be for residential buildings and, in the future, it should be offered as a commercial and industrial application.

Marie-Noëlle Séméria, director of R&D at Total, says that the combination between the energy company and Google Cloud allowed the platform to be developed in six months.

“Solar Mapper will enable Total to deploy solar panels on private rooftops more quickly in order to provide its customers with more affordable and available solar energy.”

Furthermore, the French company stated that Solar Mapper is part of its ambition to “become a world leader in the production of renewable energy, with a view to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050”.
