Alagoas recorded significant growth in the solar DG (distributed generation) sector. According to information from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), the state installed 1,531 pieces of equipment in homes, businesses, industries and buildings in urban and rural areas in 2020.

This was the highest sum in the last four years, corresponding to an increase of around 150% compared to 2019.

In total, the state of Alagoas has 2,530 systems installed and is in 22nd place in the ranking of distributed solar photovoltaic generation with 34.2 MW of power – which represents 0.7% of installed capacity in Brazil, according to data from ABSOLAR ( Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).

One of the companies that uses this technology is Aleplast, which operates in the field of disposable items for parties, food service, confectionery, retail and wholesale, in Maceió (AL).

“The panels we installed in 2020, of 75 kW, provide savings of 50% each month on our electricity bill. Without a doubt, we recommend this investment to other people”, said Eduardo Alves, administrative manager at Aleplast.

ICMS exemption

With the aim of encouraging the use of renewables, mainly solar energy, the government of Alagoas regulated, in 2016, a public policy to exempt ICMS (Tax on the Circulation of Goods and Services) on consumers' electricity bills.

“We have to pay more attention every day to encouraging the use of energy through renewable sources in Alagoas, a state that receives a strong incidence of sunlight for long periods of the year. We provide means to those interested and make it easier for the entire process to happen”, explained Caio Uchôa, superintendent of Energy and Mining at Sedetur-AL (Secretariat of Economic Development and Tourism of Alagoas).
