A participation of renewable energies in the energy matrix of state of São Paulo rose from 61.4% to 63.9% between the years 2021 and 2022 – the best brand ever registered since 2017, second data from Semil (Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics).

The conclusions were presented by the Ministry this week, with the publication of the Energy Balance of the State of São Paulo 2023, which uses 2022 as the base year.

The document analyzes the last ten years and outlines a picture of energy production and consumption in the state, allowing the market, government agencies and other interested parties to create their plans focused on sustainability and low carbon.

In recent years, the state of São Paulo has made it clear that one of its main climate goals is to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of the year 2050.

“From 2023 onwards, results are expected to be increasingly better as a result of the structuring public policies we have adopted, focused on attracting investments in energy transition projects in the state”, analyzes Natália Resende, Secretary of Environment Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of São Paulo.

Electricity

With an installed capacity of 27 GW, in 2022, electricity production in São Paulo supplied 45% of the state's needs, an addition of two percentage points compared to that recorded in 2021.

According to the study, the increase occurred due to the growth in the share of solar energy, the generation of hydroelectric plants, in addition to the increase in generation from biomass plants, thus allowing a reduction in energy generation from natural gas thermoelectric plants.

Additionally, the data shows that São Paulo's electricity consumption, in 2022, corresponded to 26% of the national amount. “In São Paulo there is a variety of sources, from hydraulic to thermal, and an expanding consumer market”, said Natália.

The bulletin also shows that São Paulo also recorded a significant increase of 19% in self-production of electricity in 2022.

“We have had a significant increase in the installation of solar panels, in addition to the recent entry into operation of the largest biomass-based thermoelectric plant in the state”, explains Marisa Barros, Undersecretary of Energy and Mining for the State of São Paulo.
