A ENGIE started the digital sale of renewable energy certificates (or I-RECs) – which prove the renewable origin of the electricity consumed.

Since May 2nd, companies with annual electricity consumption of 1,000 MWh and above have been purchasing I-RECs directly on the Energy Place platform.

The company, therefore, becomes the first to sell such certificates in a digital 100% format, favoring access for smaller companies that are starting their journey towards ESG.

I-RECs can be used to neutralize Scope 2 emissions (indirect emissions from energy consumption) from the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory within the scope of the Brazilian GHG Protocol program.

“The I-REC offer on Energy Place, also open to customers who are not part of Mercado Livre, reaffirms our commitment to making transactions involving the purchase and sale of electricity less complex,” said Gabriel Mann, marketing director at ENGIE Brasil Energia.

“We also gained breadth and offered an effective solution for companies to become more sustainable, even if they do not have a Carbon Inventory, and respond to the demands of their customers, who have already committed to the goals at COP26 of zeroing emissions across the entire chain. of the business”, he explained.

How to acquire I-REC

To purchase I-REC digitally, you must register with the tool and have energy consumption data on hand to request a quote.

According to ENGIE, the platform was designed to guarantee the security, agility and reliability of negotiations and closings.

Each I-REC is equivalent to 1 MWh of electrical energy renewable and is issued based on the certification of the generating plant – in the case of ENGIE, two hydroelectric plants operated by the company are qualified for this issuance.

“We seek, with Energy Place, to offer the appropriate solution for different consumer profiles, in order to guarantee, also in the digital environment, ENGIE’s excellence in its relationship with its customers, recognized by its more than 20 years of presence in Mercado Livre” , concluded Mann.
