According to EPE (Energy Research Company), the national electricity consumption in May totaled 43,181 GWh, growth of 2.7% compared to the same month last year. As happened in April, the residential class (+6.4%) drove the rise, followed by the commercial (+3.3%) and industrial (+1.6%) classes.
The free market, in which large companies participate, showed growth of 4.9% in monthly consumption, while captive consumption by distributors expanded by 1.2%.

- Isolated systems – 249 GWh (+4.6%);
- North – 3,880 GWh (+20.7%);
- Northeast – 6,790 GWh (+3.7%);
- Southeast/Central-West – 24,387 GWh (-0.5%);
- South – 7,874 GWh (+4.5%).
Consumption behavior by class
Residential consumption totaled 13,065 GWh in May. Contributing to this result were higher temperatures, the program to reduce losses at distributors, improvements in the quality indicators of distributors' services, reclassification of consumers to the residential class and lower electricity tariffs.
In addition to these factors, the increase in the number of residential consumers, the average income of workers and the occupancy rate also favored the increase in residential consumption.
Industrial consumption reached 15,751 GWh in May. Although the class has increased consumption, 21 of the 37 monitored sectors showed a decline, six of them among the ten most electro-intensive in the industry. See the highlights:
- Metallurgy (+254 GWh; +6.7%);
- Metallic minerals (+100 GWh; +9.1%);
- Food products (+69 GWh; +3.5%);
- Chemicals (+28 GWh; +1.8%).
The commercial class consumed 7,853 GWh in May. The good performance of the services sector and above-average temperatures favored an increase in consumption.
