Green fertilizer factory begins selection of suppliers for engineering project

O construction project of what promises to be the first green nitrogen fertilizer factory in the southern hemisphere advanced in the last days to the engineering phase.

A plant will be installed in the municipality of Uberaba (MG) for the Atlas Agro, a Swiss company focused on input production. 

In recent days, the company began the supplier selection process from the new factory to the stages of basic study and design of the engineering project, in addition to defining the parameters for a construction contract.

To the companies were invited to see the land where the factory will be built, covering more than 1 million square meters.

A technical visit took place on December 5th, with the presence of around 25 professionals, from 11 companies participating in the process, of Brazilian, European and Asian origin.

According to Atlas Agro's project director, Michael Kozlov, this is a competitive process between the biggest and best companies on the market in Brazil and abroad.

“We gave everyone the opportunity to see the terrain and the basic requirements of the project, before each company’s final proposal,” he explained. 

The visit was also attended by the mayor of Uberaba (MG), Elisa Araújo (Solidariedade). The project brings together large companies from Brazil and abroad and, therefore, we wish the venture every success, which will also be the success of our municipality and region”, she said. 

Project details

Investment in the new factory will be almost R$5 billion, with completion of the remainder expected in mid-2027.

During the construction phase of the project, more than 2,000 jobs will be created. Another 500 hires are also planned in the operation phase.

The plant will use a matrix from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, for the production of green hydrogengreen ammonia It is nitrogen fertilizers with zero carbon.

Atlas Agro project is part of the company's strategic plan for decarbonizing the fertilizer industry in Brazil.

In total, the space will have a production capacity for 500 thousand tons of fertilizers per year to serve customers in the region.

“The supplier selection process will be completed in the coming months, immediately starting the studies, followed by the engineering project”, said Rodrigo Santana, director of operations at the Swiss company.
