A Canadian Solar announced that it will build a photovoltaic components integrated manufacturing plant at China Western.

A 60 billion yuan factory (US$ 8.87 billion) will be located in the Zero Carbon Industrial Park in Haidong, Qinghai Province, and the work should be completed by the end of 2027.

The expectation is that:

  • 250,000 tons of silicon industrial;
  • 200,000 tons of polysilicon high purity;
  • 50 GW of monocrystalline silicon bars;
  • ]10 GW of monocrystalline silicon wafers;
  • 10GW Photo-voltaic cells;
  • 10GW of photovoltaic modules;
  • 10 GW of auxiliary materials per year.

According to Wang Huajie, mayor and deputy secretary of the Haidong Municipal Committee, the project, which is divided into eight subprojects, is what attracted the largest investment in Haidong city in recent years, also being the largest in scale.

Polysilicon production reaches 392 thousand tons in the 1st half of 2022

More partnerships

Canadian Solar also announced a investment agreement with Haidong municipal government to build an initial facility for the Industrial Park with annual capacity of about 50,000 tons of polysilicon high purity.

A Work will begin in 2020, with production expected to begin in mid-2024. “We are excited to further increase the level of vertical integration of our manufacturing capacity, including polysilicon production capabilities,” said Shawn Qu, CEO of Canadian Solar.

"This one contribution will help us better control costs, technology and product quality and thus further improve our power to set prices and margins. Furthermore, approximately 90% of Qinghai's installed electricity capacity is from a clean source,” he highlighted.

“Having our solar manufacturing facilities located in Qinghai gives uswill help to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our products, especially considering the high energy consumption for manufacturing polysilicon,” reported Qu.

According to the company, around 20,000 people are expected to be employed on the project, with annual sales estimated at around 120 billion yuan.

Qinghai province is recognized for offering favorable conditions for energy transmission between different regions, as well as enormous potential for the implementation of photovoltaic sources.

In May, for example, the Canadian Solar announced a new solar manufacturing strategy, bringing more own production capacity to reduce its exposure to price volatility. The greater vertical integration of this division of the company gives CSI Solar greater control over costs, technology and product quality.

“These investments are essential so that we can keep up with the increase in global market demand and, in particular, our demand from Brazilian market, which every year consolidates itself as one of the fastest growing globally”, he added Pedro Alves, general director for Latin America About the project.
