Manufacturers seek standardization in wafer and panel sizes

Trina Solar released an open letter promoting standardization in conjunction with other companies

Six months after joining six companies from the global photovoltaic industry to establish the new standard size of M10 silicon wafer to 182mm, manufacturer Trina Solar released an open letter promoting the standardization of 210mm silicon wafers and photovoltaic panels.

The document is the result of a joint action between Trina, Risen Energy, Canadian Solar, Huansheng Photovoltaic, Tongwei, Jiangsu Runergy, Tianjin Zhonghuan and Wuxi Shangji.

“Over the past few decades, the global solar industry has steadily increased the potential value of photovoltaic industry chains and systems. Through the modernization of silicon wafers, cells, technology and panel production, the size of silicon wafers has increased from 125mm, 156.75mm, 166mm, 182mm to today's size of 210mm. This trend is inevitable, along with the increase in panel power, leading to a reduction in production and energy generation costs,” the companies state in the letter.

According to the manufacturers, with the standardization of silicon wafers to 210 mm and panel sizes, the photovoltaic industry will have better scale, empowering all businesses, improving module manufacturing efficiency, optimizing supply and driving technological innovation.

Furthermore, in the open letter the companies also highlight that standardization should reduce the initial investment required for the production of photovoltaic systems, as well as reducing the cost of solar energy generation, promoting green and low-carbon initiatives.

“Trina defined this cell size in its product portfolio as it brings benefits to the supply chain of a photovoltaic panel. Furthermore, the modules provide low voltage and high power, combining an increase in energy density in photovoltaic systems. It’s a trend”, commented Guilherme Torrão Marques, Trina Solar’s product manager for Latin America.
