Brazil surpassed the brand of 29GW of installed capacity in DG segment (distributed generation) from the solar source, according to data from ABSOLATE (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).

According to the entity's survey, at the moment Brazil has more than 2.6 million systems photovoltaics installed in GD. These facilities serve more than 3.7 million UCs (consumer units) across the country.

According to ABSOLAR, there were around R$ 142.5 billion in new investments since 2012. These investments have already generated more than 870 thousand jobs green areas throughout the national territory, in addition to raising more than R$ 42.3 billion to public coffers.

Photovoltaic solar technology is present in 5,545 of the 5,568 municipalities Brazilians, around 99.5% from all over Brazil.

Ronaldo Koloszuk, president of the Board of Directors of ABSOLAR, states that the growth in own generation of solar energy is a clear sign of the popularization of the technology in the national territory.

“Market analysts point out that, in 2023 alone, solar panels registered a drop of around 50% in the average final price, increasing attractiveness and access by Brazilian consumers of different profiles”.

“Therefore, this is the best time to invest in solar systems in homes, businesses and rural properties. And there is still enormous potential for growth in the use of photovoltaic technology, as Brazil has around 92.4 million electricity consuming units in the captive market”, he added.

Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSOLAR, points out that the growth of solar DG expands Brazil's leading role in the global energy transition scenario. “Photovoltaic technology also strengthens sustainability, relieves family budgets and increases the competitiveness of Brazilian productive sectors”, he explains.

“By bringing electricity generation closer to consumption locations, solar own generation reduces the use of transmission infrastructure, relieving pressure on its operation and reducing losses over long distances, which contributes to reliability and safety at critical moments”, concludes Sauaia.

GD for Brazil

According to data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), currently the region with the highest installed power in the segment is the Southeast, with more than 9.62 GW installed. Next comes the South region, with 6.97 GW, and the Northeast, with 5.78 GW.

Among the states, São Paulo leads with more than 4 GW of installed power, while Minas Gerais (3.79 GW) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.77 GW) close the Top 3.

Government published guidelines for DG valuation

Last Tuesday (7) the CNPE (National Energy Policy Council) published guidelines for valuing the costs and benefits of DG to the electrical system, as published by Canal Solar

These guidelines comply with a determination of Law No. 14,300/2022, which establishes that all GD benefits are correctly identified, calculated and incorporated into the segment. According to ABSOLAR, the guidelines for valuation of the costs and benefits of GD signal to ANEEL the need for creation of a fair and transparent pricing mechanism to Brazilians.
