The municipality of Hortolândia, located 144 km from the capital of São Paulo, launched this Monday (11) a Energy Efficiency Program whose goal is to make the region reference nationally in the use of clean energy.

O program will install 21 photovoltaic plants in public buildings, such as health units, schools, gyms, among others. The energy generated will be equivalent to 80% of the consumption of the municipality's 199 public buildings. The forecast is to achieve savings of R$ 4 million in electricity costs.

The program also foresees the replacement of public lighting with LED lamps. The city council's expectation is to reduce the public lighting rate by 10% in 2024, which will generate savings of R$ 12 million per year for the municipality.

According to Secretariat of Urban Planning and Strategic Management of Hortolândia, 20 combustion vehicles in the municipal fleet will be replaced by electric models by March 2024. Part of the public transport fleet will also be electrified.

The program will still be implemented in the city 19 charging stations to supply electrically powered vehicles.

Among the authorities present, the launch event was attended by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, and Mayor José Nazareno Zezé Gomes.

According to the minister, the initiative will serve as a reference for the Federal Government and other cities in the country to work in an intelligent and sustainable way.

“Hortolândia demonstrates the importance of good policies in the energy sector, it is a leading role that I am sure will become a model for the whole of Brazil. The plants will generate cheaper, cleaner and renewable energy, also seeking sustainability. With the economy, resources can be applied to new investments, making the energy transition fair and inclusive”, highlighted Silveira.
