A IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) and 14 companies from all sectors of industry – some of them operating in Brazil, such as Enel, Siemens and Repsol – launched a global alliance for decarbonization of the sector, aiming to achieve the climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement.

The Agency highlights that the campaign will benefit business opportunities for the call “green industrialization”, through strategies and sharing of best practices to reduce gas emissions toxic produced by industry across the planet.

According to IRENA, just over 25% of global GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is currently produced by industrial sector, who, at the same time, is also who emits about 28% of greenhouse gas emissions.

“This Alliance represents the global industry's commitment to act on decarbonization and unlock opportunities that come with green industrialization through renewable energies and other transition-related technologies, such as green hydrogen”, explains Francesco La Camera, director general from IRENA.

The new coalition was officially launched on September 1st with the adoption of the Bali Declaration, during the IRENA Energy Transitions Investment Forum, in Indonesia. The first meeting of the Alliance is scheduled to take place in November this year, at COP 27, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

“We urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if we want to combat climate change. Responsible for more than a quarter of global emissions, the industrial sector is the second largest emitter and requires rapid decarbonization”, highlights La Camera.
