O Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, did not rule out completely to possibility of Brazil has batteries at the next Capacity Reserve Auction.
However, made it clear that there are many technological challenges and regulations to be overcome. Without these issues resolved, it is unlikely that storage systems will receive incentives from the Government.
In an interview with journalists this week, after participating in CNN Talks, in São Paulo, the minister said that it is very important to listen to the EPE (Energy research company), The ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) and the CMSE (Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee) before making that decision.
In March, during an event in Houston, in the United States, Silveira publicly expressed his desire to include batteries in the next Capacity Reserve Auction, scheduled for August.
“That is my will. My desire to have [storage] in this first auction is already public, however there are still regulatory and technological issues. Once these pending issues are resolved, we will certainly be able to place them in the first auctions”, declared the minister this week.
Silveira pointed out that there is no storage capacity in the world that makes renewable energy stable. “It will be a great advance when this happens, because we will have energies considered intermittent providing stability to the system,” he said.
O head of the MME also defends that there are incentives for the nationalization of part of the battery industry. “We cannot continue as importers of fundamental elements for the energy transition”, he highlighted.
