In May, ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) authorized the commercial operation of 493.81 MW of power in national generation in Brazil. The number exceeds the total forecast for the month, which was 280.15 MW, by 76%.

According to the agency, this increase is equivalent to enough energy to supply a city with around 600 thousand inhabitants. Wind (220 MW), solar (100 MW) and biomass (126 MW) power plants account for 90% of the increase.

The research also points out that the state that presented the greatest expansion in the electrical matrix was Sergipe (1,515.64 MW), which has the largest thermal plant in Brazil, Porto do Sergipe I, with 445 MW. In second comes Piauí (523.35 MW), driven in part by the São Gonçalo photovoltaic complex, followed by Rio Grande do Norte, with 258.88 MW predominantly wind.

Another highlight of the month was the release of small thermoelectric plants, contracted in the Generation Auction 02/2016, which now serve five communities in Amazonas.

As a result, Brazil has achieved an installed capacity of 172,574 MW in 2020 so far. Of this total in operation, 82,75% are driven by renewable sources.
